Protect Your head

We were cycling through a section of Clearwater Beach recently when all of a sudden a truck pulled out in front of us. When we all tried to brake as fast as possible I was the only one who went down. My entire right side was scraped and bruised significantly and thankfully my head was protected by my helmet because my head hit the ground very hard.

We have all seen it: cyclists or motor cyclists going down the road with no helmet. What are they thinking? Most people think it will never happen to them, but it does.

As critical as it is to protect your head while riding, how much greater to protect our heads by protecting what we think. The Bible has something to say about protecting your head by putting on the helmet that God has provided, by bringing every thought captive, and by focusing on what is good.

1. Use the helmet God has provided.

Ephesians 6:11-17 (ESV) 11 Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the schemes of the devil. 12 For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the cosmic powers over this present darkness, against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly places. 13 Therefore take up the whole armor of God,that you may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand firm. 14 Stand therefore, having fastened on the belt of truth, and having put on the breastplate of righteousness, 15 and, as shoes for your feet, having put on the readiness given by the gospel of peace. 16 In all circumstances take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming darts of the evil one; 17 and take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God, The most ridiculous thing to see is a person riding down the road with his/her helmet strapped to the side of the motorcycle. As if a crash comes with a warning and you have time to put on the helmet. How much more ridiculous, according to God’s Word, is the person who knows the truth but refuses to put on the helmet of salvation.

1 Timothy 1:15 (ESV) The saying is trustworthy and deserving of full acceptance, that Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners, of whom I am the foremost.

Acts 4:12 (ESV) And there is salvation in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given among men by which we must be saved.\"

Trusting Jesus Christ for salvation and Jesus alone is putting on the helmet of salvation. Preparing for battle is to renew our faith in Him by reviewing what He has done for us and by thanking Him for His sovereign grace in saving us from our sins. Each time we think about His saving us we are protecting our heads from the pitfalls that surround us. 2. Bringing into captivity every thought.

2 Corinthians 10:5 (ESV) We destroy arguments and every lofty opinion raised against the knowledge of God, and take every thought captive to obey Christ, God has not left us powerless. We are told that the same power that raised Jesus from the dead resides in us and helps us live the life that is pleasing to God.

Ephesians 1:16-20 (ESV) 16 I do not cease to give thanks for you, remembering you in my prayers, 17 that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, may give you a spirit of wisdom and of revelation in the knowledge of him, 18 having the eyes of your hearts enlightened, that you may know what is the hope to which he has called you, what are the riches of his glorious inheritance in the saints, 19 and what is the immeasurable greatness of his power toward us who believe, according to the working of his great might 20 that he worked in Christ when he raised him from the dead and seated him at his right hand in the heavenly places,

Too many times we act like we are helpless about the things we think about. Wrong! Protect your head. Drive out those unhealthy thoughts, those worrisome thoughts, and those self destructive thoughts. Not by your power but by the power God has given you through Jesus Christ. Take those thoughts captive and drive them out. Protect your head.

3. Focus on the good.

Philippians 4:8 (ESV) Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is commendable, if there is any excellence, if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things. Just driving out the bad thoughts, negative thoughts, or destructive thoughts must be followed by an infusion of the good or we’ll fall back into the trap of “stickin thinkin” (A term coined by Zig Ziglar). God’s solution is to fill our minds with the good. Protect your head with the Word of God through healthy meditation.

Psalms 19:7-11 (ESV) 7 The law of the Lord is perfect, reviving the soul; the testimony of the Lord is sure, making wise the simple; 8 the precepts of the Lord are right, rejoicing the heart; the commandment of the Lord is pure, enlightening the eyes; 9 the fear of the Lord is clean, enduring forever; the rules of the Lord are true, and righteous altogether. 10 More to be desired are they than gold, even much fine gold; sweeter also than honey and drippings of the honeycomb. 11 Moreover, by them is your servant warned; in keeping them there is great reward. Instead of taking a chance, protect your head.

God continues to give us opportunities for ministry. Among all the preparations for ministry in Brazil and other places, a publisher contacted me and wants the manuscript of Power In The Valley which is the study of ten valleys in the Bible and the practical lessons for life from which we can glean. Please pray for this effort.

Also Lord willing, we leave later this week, May 16th, for Brazil where we’ll be ministering in churches in the Sao Carlos area then on the way to the Ironman venue in Florianopolis where I will be participating in Ironman Brazil May 25th.

Thank you for your prayerful support of our PowerBreak extensions of ministry.

All tax deductible donations can be made through Christ Community Presbyterian Church, 2310 Nursery Road, Clearwater, FL 33764. Please note “Brubaker Missions Trip” on your check. Thank you for praying and for giving to help make these ministry opportunities possible.
