WATER QUALITY UPDATE

In response to the Columbus Dispatch article that seems to be causing unnecessary alarm about the water quality in the Ohio State Park lakes.  Although harmful algal blooms have been spotted at state parks and lakes, it has not been found at Buck Creek State Park, Ohio Department of Natural Resources spokeswoman Heidi Hetzel-Evans has confirmed. In addition C.J. Brown Reservoir is safe for swimming as confirmed by Buck Creek State Park manager Virgil Goodwin.

The Great Buckeye Challenge - located at the beautiful Buck Creek State Park in Springfield, Ohio. With the new location in 2008 at Buck Creek State Park, the Great Buckeye Challenge enjoyed some major upgrades to the bike and run courses. The sprint course will feature an opening 1,000 meter rectangle swim along the beach, a 21k out and back bike course and an out-and-back run course on a gently rolling bike trail. The mini course will feature the same 1,000 meter swim course followed by a 40k loop bike course and finishing with an out-and-back 10k run on the bike trail. The half iron distance race features a two lap swim, followed by a two lap - 28 mile rolling bike course and finishing with a two lap out-and-back run on the bike trail.

Cut-off Times

The official race finish is at 4:00pm. The cutoff for the swim is 1 hour and 15 minutes after the start of the last wave. Any participant still in the water at this time will be disqualified and will not be permitted to continue with the race. The cutoff for the bike is 1:00pm. Any participant still on the bike at this time will be disqualified and will not be permitted to continue with the race. The cutoff for the run is 4:00pm. Any participant still on the run course at this time will be disqualified and removed from the course. These cutoffs are in place for the athletes safety and it is critical that any participant that is disqualified adhere to the official's call.

 

Medical

There will be medical staff on site at the swim, bike, and run finish. Feel free to visit the medical unit if you feel for any reasons that you need their help. You will not be penalized for receiving medical evaluation. You will be withdrawn from the race if you require transportation or IV fluids. If you have been put on medications different from your medical question on the entry form please let us know at registration. It is very important that our medical staff knows all medication you are currently taking.

 

Parking on Race Day

See attached parking map for details. There is PARKING AT BUCK CREEK STATE PARK ON RACE DAY. EVERYONEMUST park in the designated parking areas south of the staging area. Don’t drive around the cones to park closer expecting to find optional parking. THERE IS NONE! Thank you for your cooperation in this matter. We park everyone in these lots so you can leave without driving in front of bikers on the course.

 

Aid Stations

The run aid stations will have ice, water, HEED, Hammer Gel, E-Caps, fruit and cookies at the transition exit, mile 1, mile two, and mile three. Participants will pass by each aid station twice on the way out and back. Half participants will pass by the aid stations four times. Half participants will have two aid stations on the bike with water and HEED (in bottles), ice, Hammer Gel, E-Caps, fruit and cookies. Aid stations wil be in the town of Catawba and the turn around back at the transition area (mile 28).

Timing Chip Pick-Up

Timing chip pick-up is Sunday (race day) from 6:00 am - 7:30 am
*You must wear a chip in order to be timed and receive results after the event.

*You will be charged $30 for each lost or non-returned chip.

 

Race Packets

All pre-registered participants will receive an official race technical t-shirt*, post race food and beverages and much more.

*Those registering the week of the race will not be guaranteed an official race t-shirt.

 

Awards

The top three Elite Open, Elite Masters & Elite Grand Masters male and female in the sprint and Olympic races will receive medals. In addition, the top three in all age groups (14 & under, 15-19, 20-24…75+), Clydesdale, Athena, Mountain Bike, Aqua Bike and all relay teams divisions will receive
awards.
