Half Iron Triathlon 1.2mi Swim/ 55.5mi Bike 13.1mi Run

 

The Shawnee area is dubbed Ohio's Little Smokies. Looking toward the Ohio River, one can certainly see how the region acquired such a nickname. From the highest points in the forest, ridge after ridge appears to roll away toward the horizon in a gentle blue haze.

 

HFP Racing and Shawnee State Park and Forest invite you to Ohio's season opening long course triathlon - The Little Smokies Half Iron. This exciting course serves as the final event of the American Triple-T Ohio event, giving you an opportunity to compete long side Triple-T participants as they battle for top honors. The race is scheduled for Sunday, May 23 in the beautiful Shawnee State Park and Forest located in Portsmouth, Ohio. Shawnee State Park is nestled in the Appalachian Hills of southern Ohio. The Little Smokies Half Iron will challenge all ability levels as you take on this challenging bike and run course.

 

Start Time

Half Iron Triathlon

7:45am Tri Men 39 & under and All Elite Men
7:47am Tri Men 40+, Clydesdale Men, MTB and relay teams
7:49am All Tri Women

 

Cut-off Times

The official race finish is at 3:30pm. The cutoff for the swim is 1 hour and 15 minutes after the start of the last wave. Any participant still in the water at this time will be disqualified and will not be permitted to continue with the race. The cutoff for the bike finish is 12:30pm. The cutoff for lap #1 of the bike is 11:00am. Any participant still on the bike at this time will be disqualified and will not be permitted to continue with the race. The cutoff for the run is 3:30pm. The cutoff for lap #1 on the run is 2:00pm. Any participant still on the run course at this time will be disqualified and removed from the course. These cutoffs are in place for the athletes safety and it is critical that any participant that is disqualified adhere to the official's call.

 

Medical

There will be medical staff on site at the swim, bike, and run finish. Feel free to visit the medical unit if you feel for any reasons that you need their help. You will not be penalized for receiving medical evaluation. You will be withdrawn from the race if you require transportation or IV fluids. If you have been put on medications different from your medical question on the entry form please let us know at registration. It is very important that our medical staff knows all medication you are currently taking.

 

Parking on Race Day

There is LIMITED PARKING AT SHAWNEE STATE PARK ON RACE DAY. All participants MUST park in the designated parking areas along the main entrance of the park and south of the staging area. Don’t drive around the cones to park closer expecting to find optional parking. THERE IS NONE! Thank you for your cooperation in this matter. We park everyone in these lots so you can leave without driving in front of bikers on the course. If you come on Saturday to check in remember the American Triple-T participants will be racine from 7am - 11:30am and 3pm to 6:30pm.

 

Aid Stations

The run aid stations will have ice, water, HEED, Hammer Gel, E-Caps, fruit and cookies at the transition exit, mile 1, mile two, and mile three. Participants will pass by each aid station twice on the way out and back. Half participants will pass by the aid stations four times. Participants will have just ONE aid station on the bike at the bike turnaround (mile 27.75) in front of transition with water and HEED (in bottles), ice, Hammer Gel, E-Caps, fruit and cookies.

Course Info

SWIM: The 1.2 mile swim is a counter clockwise 2-lap course featuring a dry land start. Wetsuits Allowed - water temperature ranges from upper 50’s to upper 60’s.

 

BIKE: The 55.5 mile bike is a challenging 2-lap course passing through the fabulous Shawnee State Forest passing along Harber Creek valley on
rolling paved fire roads before climbing up through Rock Lick Hollow. The backside of the course is another rolling section through the Bear Creek valley before climbing back out of the valley on Route 125. This course is very twisting and turning and requires good bike handling skills. Come with the proper gearing (42x25-rear) on your bike or you’re not going to have much fun.


RUN: The 13.1 mile run is a 2-lap out and back course on the park fire road (some parts gravel/dirt, some paved).

 

Registration & Packet Pickup

Saturday at the park beach area from 12:00 pm - 2:30 pm
Sunday (race day) Packet Pickup only from 5:00 am - 6:45 am at the park beach area.

There is NO RACE DAY REGISTRATION, packet pickup ONLY!

 

Timing Chip Pick-Up

Timing chip pick-up is Sunday (race day) from 5:00 am - 6:45 am
*You must wear a chip in order to be timed and receive results after the event.

*You will be charged $30 for each lost or non-returned chip.

 

Race Packets

All pre-registered participants will receive an official race technical t-shirt, post race food and beverages and much more.

 

Awards/Race Divisions

The top three male and female in each race division of both the sprint

mini and half distances will receive awards.

Race divisions are as follows:
Age Group - 15-19, 20-24, 25-29, 30-34, 35-39, 40-44, 45-49,

50-54, 55-59, 60-64, 65-69, 70-74, 75+
Elite Open - 15-39 years old, has chance to finish in top 10 overall
Elite Master - 40-75 years old, has chance to finish in top 10 overall
Clydesdale - Males racing weight groups, not age:
-under 39 & 185lbs-199lbs
-under 39 & 200lbs-224lbs
-under 39 & 225lbs +
-over 40 & 185lbs-199lbs

-over 40 & 200lbs-224lbs
-over 40 & 225lbs+
Athena - Females racing weights group, not age group - 150lbs+
Mountain Bike - racing on a heavier bike with wider tires then a triathlon bike
Aquabike - racing only the swim and bike portions only (no running)

Triathlon Team - one swim, one cyclist, one runner
Duathlon Team - one runner does both runs, one cyclist
