Race Director's Corner

Welcome to 2009

Wow – how very excited I am about the 2009 racing season.  Personally, I get to tackle the Wheelie Fun Series as an official Master Triathlete and as a race director I get to bring back a race venue that has major historical significance in the Ohio multisport racing scene.

On September 20 HFP Racing will be bringing back the very popular Hueston Woods State Park venue. One of the original race venues of the Wheelie Fun Series some 18 years ago, Hueston Woods State Park was a fan favorite and was yielding significant (500+) participant numbers well before the sport grabbed a firm foothold on the Ohio multisport community.  Hueston Woods offers a beautiful venue that Mark Lemmon (then a writer for Lew Kidder’s Triathlon Today) once proclaimed was “made for a triathlon”. With a rolling 9 mile cycling loop surrounding the boat-free Acton Lake and a run up the Sugar Bush trail, Hueston Woods is nearly a perfect triathlon venue.

Also new for 2009 is a spring tune-up in Springboro, Ohio – the Coffman YMCA Triathlon, featuring a 400 yard pool swim, followed by a 11 mile bike and finishing with a 5k run on Saturday, May 9th.

And for those that can remember starting their triathlon season each year at the Defiance Triathlon back in the early 90’s, the re-formatted Defiance Triathlon will make its return on Sunday, July 26 in Defiance, Ohio.  This point-to-point triathlon will feature a half mile swim in the newly minted Defiance Reservoir, followed by a picturesque 15.5 mile bike along the Maumee River and finishing with a 4 mile run through Defiance College that culminates with a dramatic finish at Pontiac Park.

Bring it!
