The Weekly Powerbreak

What is more important?

What Is Most Important?

How well have been “on track?” Some people say the way to tell what is most important in your life is to assess your daily activities and your weekly spending. What would those two areas tell about your life? What pops to the top in the way of importance?

Where is God in the matter?

Jesus was confronted by a group of religious leaders who wanted to trap Him by asking Him what the greatest or most important commandment was, to which Jesus replied:

Mark 12:28-31 (ESV) 28 And one of the scribes came up and heard them disputing with one another, and seeing that he answered them well, asked him, "Which commandment is the most important of all?" 29 Jesus answered, "The most important is, 'Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God, the Lord is one. 30 And you shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength.' 31 The second is this: 'You shall love your neighbor as yourself.' There is no other commandment greater than these."

Jesus is reminding the people to give God priority in everything. “Give him all you got and then some,” the old coach might say. That means you test yourself regularly to make sure He is most important. Lest you think that God is calling you to just become some religious fanatic, Jesus adds the second to “love your neighbor as yourself.”

When it comes down to it in the test of time, energy, and use of our finances, we are basically pretty selfish people. When we are serious about serving God as “most important” then we will take a regular assessment and make needed changes. We can be sure that God takes notice of even the little changes and makes sure we know He notices.

2 Chronicles 16:9 (ESV) For the eyes of the Lord run to and fro throughout the whole earth, to give strong support to those whose heart is blameless toward him. You have done foolishly in this, for from now on you will have wars."

Psalms 145:19 (ESV) He fulfills the desire of those who fear him; he also hears their cry and saves them.

Today’s challenge is to take a serious look at what the use of your time, talent, and treasure shows.

Matthew 6:19-21 (ESV) 19 "Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal, 20 but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys and where thieves do not break in and steal. 21 For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.

What is most important?
